RUNNING FOR OFFICE

WHO'S ON THE BALLOT?

In the 2026 midterm elections, these offices will be on the ballot:

  • Congress (also known as US House)

  • State Senator (half of the seats will be on the ballot)

  • State Representative (all 100 seats will be on the ballot)

  • County offices (exact offices depend on your county, but this includes county clerk, county treasurer, county council, and more).

  • School board (exact offices depend on your school district).

BALLOT VACANCIES:

Although candidate filing for the 2026 Primary Election has passed and the primary is over, there are still opportunities to get on the ballot!

If no one has filed from your party for an office, your county party can fill that vacancy from May 8th through noon July 3rd. Contact your county party to inquire about ballot vacancies. If you cannot find contact information for your county party, contact your county's election board.

SCHOOL BOARD:

School board candidates can file from May 19 - June 18 by noon. Beginning this year, school board candidates will have the option to file as nonpartisan, independent, Republican, or Democratic.

Candidates must file the CAN-34 form and the CAN-12 form.

COUNTY PARTIES

Getting involved in your county's political party is how you can create change at a foundational level.

Precinct chairs (PCs) and vice precinct chairs (VPCs) serve volunteer 4-year terms within their county party. There may be over 100 PC and VPC seats within a county. These seats are elected by the voters in the primary every 4 years, but the county chairpersons can also appoint individuals to serve as a PC if there is a vacancy. It's a great first step to getting involved in local politics. Contact your county party to inquire about becoming a PC or VPC.

Party Organizational Structure.png

The role of a PC and VPC is to connect with voters within their precinct by registering them to vote, engaging with them, and ensuring they're vote ready. PCs and VPCs also help with GOTV initiatives by passing out campaign literature and canvassing.

PCs and VPCs elect county party leadership, vote on official party business, and help fill vacancies by voting in replacement elected officials if the previous office holder vacates the seat.

This bottom-up approach helps ensure that the will of the people is carried out, and gives PCs collective power, because they determine who will lead the party and what the party's platform, goals, and vision will be.

Another important county party role is State Delegate.  These individuals select the party's nominees for statewide executive offices in a one-day state convention with their fellow delegates. In 2026, delegates will be selecting the official candidates for the statewide offices of Secretary of State, Auditor, and Treasurer.
